The home of Greenwich Mean Time shuts its gates on 2 November for a refurbishment, and it is spending its last half term on ghosts: a tour of Greenwich's treason, death and witchcraft, and a pumpkin trail round the observatory.

Dates and times

Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, open 10am to 5pm, last entry at 4pm. From 2 November the whole site closes for the First Light transformation project; the Peter Harrison Planetarium has been shut for it since September 2025.

The Ghastly Greenwich tour

Forty-five minutes on the haunting history of Greenwich — its ghosts, treason, death and witchcraft. 4pm on Saturday 24, Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October. It costs £5 for adults, £3.50 for students and £2.50 for children, on top of admission.

The Halloween trail

Every day, included with admission: riddles lead to pumpkins hidden round the site, and the letters found along the way unscramble into a secret word.

What it costs

Admission to the Royal Observatory is £24 for adults, £18 for students and £12 for children; under-4s and members go free. Royal Museums Greenwich pitch every half-term activity at ages 7 and up.

Programme

24, 27, 28 and 29 October, 4pm — Ghastly Greenwich tour
45 minutes. £5 adults, £3.50 students, £2.50 children, on top of admission.
Daily — Halloween trail
Riddles, hidden pumpkins and a secret word. Included with admission.
24–25 October, 10.15am–1.30pm, and 31 October–1 November, 1.45–4.30pm — Observatory Unlocked: Moon
The observatory's astronomers on the lunar surface, beside Luke Jerram's two-metre Mirror Moon. Included with admission.

The tour is the thing to plan round, and its hour is the catch: it starts at 4pm, which is also the last entry to the site. Arrive at four for a four o'clock tour and one is cutting it awfully fine, so come for the afternoon — the trail first, the tour to close the day, and out into Greenwich Park as the light goes. There are only four of them, none on the second weekend, and after the 1st the gates do not open again this year. For a family with children under seven, Eltham's pumpkin party a few miles south-east is the kinder choice on the same dates.
