Most of London waits for the fifth of November. Herne Hill does not: the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome light their bonfire on Halloween, Saturday 31 October 2026, in the middle of the track that held the cycling at the 1948 Olympics, and put on the fireworks an hour later.
The evening, by the clock
Gates open at 5pm, the fancy dress competition is at 5.45, the bonfire is lit at 6 and the fireworks go up at 7. Fire-eaters come between the bonfire and the fireworks, an LED dance show after them, and the evening closes at 9.30pm.
Tickets
Advance only, and nothing at the gate. Adults £13, 12 to 16 £8, under-12s £1, each plus a booking fee of £1, 75p or 50p. Under-12s must come with an adult. Refunds are given only if the event is cancelled, but a ticket may be passed on to someone else.
What to know before going
There are food and drink stalls on site; alcohol, glass and outside food are not allowed. There is no parking at the velodrome and very little nearby. The event is wheelchair accessible, and the organisers ask to be told in advance. Proceeds go to the velodrome and to cycling in the wider community.
Getting there
Herne Hill, North Dulwich and West Dulwich stations are each a short walk away, and the 3, 37 and 201 buses run close by.
The rest of the weekend in south London
Earlier the same day, the Horniman's Day of the Dead in Forest Hill runs from 11am to 4pm. And for those who prefer their fireworks on the traditional date, or near enough, Blackheath follows a week later.
Programme
- 5pm
- Gates open.
- 5.45pm
- Fancy dress competition.
- 6pm
- Bonfire lit.
- 6.20pm
- Fire-eaters.
- 7pm
- Fireworks.
- 7.20pm
- LED dance show.
- 9.30pm
- Close.
The order of the evening is kinder to small children than most firework nights. The fancy dress judging comes first, at a quarter to six, so costumes are seen while their wearers are still fresh; the fireworks are at seven rather than half past eight; and a family can be home by eight without missing anything but the LED show. Do arrive at five rather than at ten to seven, though — the gates, not the fireworks, are where the evening queues.
