The Nightmare Realm

The Nightmare Realm has spent seventeen Halloweens frightening Ireland. In 2026 it opens in London for the first time, in Avery Hill Mansion, the Victorian house in Avery Hill Park, Eltham, for 18 selected nights between 9 October and 1 November.

What is inside

Three main attractions: Halloween Town, Avery Hill Asylum and Sundown Manor, plus five further experiences that the organisers prefer to keep to themselves until one is standing in them. Allow an hour and a half to two hours. The site closes at 10 or 10.30pm.

Who it is for

The organisers recommend it from 13, and anyone under 16 must come with an adult over 18. It is, one gathers, a genuine fright rather than a pumpkin trail, and a family with younger children would be far happier at Eltham Palace by daylight.

Nights and tickets

It does not open every night: only on the 18 dates on the booking page. Fridays, Saturdays and the final week are peak nights; Sunday to Thursday are off-peak. A Fast Pass is on sale for those who would rather not queue, and parking is free.

Getting there

By Tube, take the Jubilee line to North Greenwich and the 132 bus to Bexley Road / Reinickendorf Avenue. By rail, New Eltham station is about a fifteen-minute walk.

Elsewhere in Eltham and Greenwich

The gentler half of the borough's Halloween is close by: the Great Pumpkin Party at Eltham Palace runs every day of half-term, and the Royal Observatory offers Ghastly Greenwich tours in its last week before closing.

The quiet nights are the clever ones. A scare attraction is a queue with frights at intervals, and on a peak Saturday in the final week the queue wins; on an off-peak Sunday to Thursday the same three houses come round far faster, and the Fast Pass becomes a luxury rather than a necessity. Do allow the full two hours, and do look up the last 132 back towards North Greenwich before setting off.
