Coram's Fields keeps a rule one cannot help finding rather charming: no adult may come in unless accompanied by a child. It is a children's park in the middle of Bloomsbury, and on Bonfire Night it holds a fireworks display that costs nothing at all, which in central London is a rare thing.
Thursday 5 November
The gates open at 3.30pm, there are performances on a stage through the late afternoon, and the fireworks go up at 6pm. The event closes at 7pm, an hour at which a good many of its guests will be expected to be thinking about bed.
Getting in
General entry is free and needs no ticket: one simply arrives. It is first come, first served, so entry is not guaranteed once the park is full. For a guaranteed place there are free Fast-Track tickets, booked in advance through Eventbrite, each for one adult and one child with more of either added on. They admit you at any time during the event, by the Pitches gate on the north side, opposite the Foundling Museum, though they do not come with a better view. Free accessible viewing tickets, entered from Guilford Street, are kept for families with a genuine access need, and there are only so many of them.
Who may come
Children, and the adults who are with them. The rule applies to every kind of entry, Fast-Track and accessible included, so a party of grown-ups without a child will not be admitted, however nicely it asks.
What else is on
Food and drink stalls, fairground rides and the stage performances. Guilford Street is closed to traffic for the evening and open to people on foot. And the display is broadcast to the children on the wards of Great Ormond Street Hospital, round the corner, which is perhaps the nicest detail of the whole affair.
Getting there
Russell Square, on the Piccadilly line, is the nearest station and a few minutes' walk away; King's Cross St Pancras is a little further.
The weekend after
For those who would like more of the same with a ticket, the big displays follow on Saturday 7 November: Battersea Park south of the river, Blackheath in the south-east and Alexandra Palace in the north. And on this very Thursday, Wimbledon Park holds the first of Merton's two nights.
Arrive early or book the Fast-Track: those are the two sensible courses. A free display in a small park in central London, on Bonfire Night itself, fills up, and general entry simply stops when it does, so a family turning up at a quarter to six is taking its chances. The Fast-Track tickets cost nothing and remove the gamble entirely; the one thing they do not buy is a better spot, so one still wants to be inside in good time for six o'clock.
